Our desire for victory shouldn't over-shadow the vital importance of "the preparation" for victory.
Best selling author Rick Warren of "The Purpose Driven Life" says, "You weren't put on earth to be remembered. You were put here to prepare for eternity." I was astonished reading the passage for the first time. I went directly into game mode; studying, dissecting and evaluating. I examined and meditated on his message in order to gather the understanding, meaning and purpose of his words.
Pastor Warren reminds us that our creation wasn't to establish an earthly legacy. But, to focus on building a heavenly inheritance that's solid as granite. As coaches we have a captured audience, often time broken from the changes of life. We have a duty and responsibility to educate, motivate, instruct, and guide our student/athletes, not only in improving their physical skills but to enhance and develop their mental, social and spiritual skills as well. Mending those pieces back together creates a bond for life (Jeremiah 18:3-4).
As coaches we chart our course to victory with game film, practice, weight room, and game planning. We cultivate raw talent into gifted skilled athletes. We illustrate to our student/athletes that the road to victory is not easy or cheap. And the pathway to righteousness is narrow and filled with sacrifice (John 14:6).
When a player performs his last audition before the deafening roar of the crowd, he is quickly reminded at the end of the day that all gifts, talents and skills belong to Almighty God.
